Lenten “Called to Community” Challenge
Mar 1 @ 2:31 pm – Apr 16 @ 3:31 pm
Pick up a “Challenge Card” in the Welcome Center!

Beginning the weekend of March 4/5, all Bethlehem disciples are invited and encouraged to participate in a different kind of “Lenten Plunge”, the “Called to Community Challenge”.

Like previous plunge experiences, we have the opportunity this year to be open to something new during Lent, something that stretches our understanding and experience, something that requires effort and sacrifice of time. This year, rather than focusing on how we can care for the community outside our walls, we’re focusing more on how we relate to and care for one another here at Bethlehem.

The “Called to Community Challenge” is an opportunity for each of us to commit to creating stronger community at Bethlehem in an intentional way, prompted by Challenge Cards. These cards will focus us on hospitality, welcome, connection and relationship.

“Called to Community” Challenge Cards will be displayed on a kiosk in our Welcome Center area throughout Lent, indicating various ways that we can challenge ourselves by trying new interactions with others, stepping outside of our comfort zones and usual routines, and really taking time to notice one another.

How the “Called to Community Challenge” Works:

  • Make a commitment to our Bethlehem community and any guests by engaging in this challenge.
  • Choose a card (or two or more!) from the kiosk, without looking at the suggested activity.
  • Complete the activity or action during the season of Lent.
  • Participate as deeply as you desire by continually challenging yourself with additional cards.
The kiosk will be refilled with new cards as needed.
  • Keep note of any unique sacrifices required of you and the rewards that the challenge activity brought you.
  • Share your experience in conversation with others.

Check out our Updated Welcome Center!

A comfortable, inviting atmosphere will be evolving in our Welcome Center during Lent to inspire our congregation to live into genuine Christian community. The space, atmosphere and amenities provided will enhance our ability to live the virtues of community that we are called to live, particularly through hospitality, welcome, connection and relationship with one another. Stop by on a Sunday morning for a cup of coffee before or after worship, beginning Sunday, March 12, and connect with fellow disciples, visitors and guests!

Read Along with Your Pastors:

“Called to Community: The Life Jesus Wants for His People”

This book will guide much of the preaching during Lent. Pastors Mark and Sarah will draw from this resource as they reflect on Jesus’ call to Christian community, and we encourage you to use this book as your daily devotional.

We will also be sending mid-week emails with excerpts from the book along with a “nugget” from our Sunday  sermons to help us carry the messages from Sunday into our daily lives.
