On Good Shepherd Sunday, many congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) across the state celebrate their shared social ministry with Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI).

LSSI has been caring for God’s lambs and sheep for 149 years, ever since it opened its first orphanage on Illinois’ western prairie. This year’s theme in Adventure Club was “Stepping Up, Stepping Out.” The children learned how we can step out of our comfort zone for God, that we can all be disciples in the most ordinary of places, and that we are called to bring our faith with us in our daily lives. You will hear from every group of our children’s ministry during this special worship service. Come ready to learn and be impressed by what our kids are doing here at Bethlehem.

BUILDING COMMUNITY INVITATION-TO-PRAYER

The weekend of October 29-30 marks the start of Bethlehem’s Building Community invitation-to-prayer, when we ask every disciple to prayerfully consider how you will support Bethlehem, both in the upcoming 2017 budget year as well as our proposed 3 year facility enhancement capital campaign.

There is no prescribed amount that you or your family should feel obligated to commit. It is our sincere hope that each disciple submits their pledges through a spirit of joy and thanksgiving in response to how God has blessed them. This is our opportunity to extend that grace to others through the ministries of Bethlehem.

The Building Community Team is hosting a Celebration Brunch on Sunday, November 13 and we hope that you will attend. We ask that you please turn in your pledge commitment card at that time, but no later than Sunday, November 20. It is important that we receive pledges as soon as possible so leadership can be making informed decisions.

Bethlehem’s campaign leadership team thanks you for your prayerful support and we look forward to great things in 2017 and beyond.

“Race to Nowhere” Discussion
Jan 12 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
"Race to Nowhere" Discussion

Please join as Kelly Collins follows up on Trevor Simpson’s “Finding Balance” series by leading a discussion of the powerful documentary “Race to Nowhere: Transforming Education from the Ground Up”.

Here is a brief synopsis about the documentary:

“Race to Nowhere” is a film that calls us to challenge current thinking about how we prepare our children for success. Named by TakePart.com as one of “10 Education Documentaries You Don’t Want to Miss”, “Race to Nowhere” brings communities together to spark dialogue and galvanize change in America’s schools.

Featuring the heartbreaking stories of students across the country who have been pushed to the brink by over-scheduling, over-testing and the relentless pressure to achieve, “Race to Nowhere” points to a silent epidemic in our schools. Through the testimony of educators, parents and education experts, it reveals an education system in which cheating has become commonplace; students have become disengaged; stress-related illness, depression and burnout are rampant; and young people arrive at college and the workplace unprepared and uninspired.

Shown nationwide and internationally in more than 7,000 schools, universities, cinemas, hospitals, corporations and community centers, “Race to Nowhere” has become the centerpiece of a nationwide, grassroots movement for the transformation of education

Please watch the documentary before January 12 so you’re familiar with the topic (90 minutes – You can rent it on YouTube, Google Play, NetFlix, Amazon or iTunes) then come to explore with others how we can work together to create better balance in the lives of our youth & families.

All are invited!

CROP Hunger Walk - October 14

Join us for the 2017 CROP Hunger Walk

On Oct. 14, walkers from 15 Tri-Cities churches will gather at Bethlehem for a 5k walk to end hunger here and abroad. Registration starts at 8:00 am with food packing for the Salvation Army, kids’ activities, and fun hands-on learning about hunger. We will walk through Delnor Woods and the surrounding neighborhood, returning to our own parking lot.

Funds raised will go to Northern Illinois Food Bank, Salvation Army, and the Batavia Inter-Faith Food Pantry and to Church World Service projects around the world.

Sign up HERE  to participate or to sponsor a walker. You also can contact Ingrid Nelson with questions (ingridclarenelson@gmail.com).
