Lenten Devotional-Plunging Into Scripture

Lenten Devotional-Plunging Into Scripture

Click here to read our 2016 Lenten Devotional.

Most of us have a Bible at home. Most of us regard the Bible as sacred and authoritative for our lives of faith. But how many of us feel incapable when it comes to picking it up and reading it?

For most of my life, I felt poorly-equipped to read the Bible. A combination of its hefty size and difficult language left me feeling deflated by my own lack of understanding and frustrated by how hard it was to find something in there that felt relevant to my life.

Seminary helped, for sure. But more than the classes I took on Old Testament literature, more than the Greek verbs I spent hours memorizing, what helped me the most was this insight from one of my professors: that the purpose of reading Scripture is less about “figuring it out” or “reading it the right way” and much more about forming a relationship with a living Word that, each and every time, has the potential to reshape us as people of God. In other words, the Bible is not just meant to be studied or analyzed, but to be savored and experienced in a way that can really change us as people, parents, children, citizens, employees, and disciples.

I’m so thankful for the 47 disciples in our community who were willing to open their hearts and minds to Scripture and share with us how a particular passage spoke to them. I pray that the reflections and insights shared in this devotional will bring meaning to your Lenten journey. I also hope it will inspire you to dig into God’s Word every day and be open to what God might say to you through these ancient and living words.

God’s blessings to you,

Pastor Sarah

You will hear from every group of our children’s ministry during this special worship service. Come ready to learn and be impressed by what our kids are doing here at Bethlehem.
