Adult Education

Adult Education at Bethlehem this Fall!

Sunday mornings will be a great time to connect with your fellow BLC disciples, spend a bit of time nurturing our faith, and engage in thought provoking conversations! The coffee isn’t half bad either!

Please find below are our fall offerings (Adult Education will be located in the Overflow Room, this room is located right behind the sanctuary):

Embracing the Prophets in Contemporary Culture

September 18: Moral Coherence in a World of Power, Money, and Violence

October 9: The Grief of Loss as Divine Judgment

October 23: The Promissory Language that Breaks Despair

Walter Brueggemann, arguably America’s leading Old Testament scholar and theologian, takes us on a wild ride through the poetic prophecy of the Hebrew Scripture, identifying cultural contexts, putting a framework to Israel’s history, and, most significantly—and at times challengingly! —drawing connections between Israel’s sociological, economic, and spiritual status and that of America today.

BLC Advocacy Team

September 25:  We are privileged to host Greg Pierce, noted community organizer, author, thought leader, and vibrant speaker. Two of Greg’s books, Activisim that Makes Sense: Congregations and Community Organizing and Reveille for a New Generation, will provide the basis for a lively discussion on what happens when our congregation joins with other community organizations to work for long-term sustainable change in our towns and throughout our larger area.

The Bethlehem team of the Fox River Valley Initiative is hosting the morning. Some friends from St Charles Episcopal (located across the street–also a member of Fox River Valley Initiative–will be joining us as well). Come one and all!

You will be affirmed, challenged, and gratified to be a Bethlehem disciple part of such a vital ministry!

October 2: This Sunday, the BLC Advocacy team will guide us in conversation based on the findings of the team’s listening campaign. A team of BLC disciples engaged in intentional conversations with other fellow BLC disciples. Let’s discover together how this listening campaign strengthened relationships with each other and how might the results of this exercise inform our ministry and work together?

Christianity: What’s Under the Hood, and How It Got There

A survey from Pre-History to the Council of Nicaea

November 6

November 13

November 20

Come and join fellow BLC disciple Mike Weible as he leads us on a journey of pre-Christian history straight through to the gathering of the Council of Nicaea!

We will discover new insight and understanding of what lead to this gathering and the impact it had on Christianity. Council of Nicaea was the first council in the history of the Christian church that was intended to address the entire body of believers. It was convened by the emperor Constantine to resolve controversy around the issue that Christ was not divine but was a created being.
