May 24, 2020 In our gospel for today, we get the rare opportunity to eavesdrop on Jesus praying. The setting for this prayer is the Upper Room on Maundy Thursday, and I imagine the mood in the room to be heavy and poignant. Every word, deed, and gesture that Jesus puts into the room that night is weighted with the reality that there’s not much time left to be together in this way. There’s a sense of urgency, Jesus really trying to hone in on what matters most, and before he puts it into words, he washes feet and feeds his friends bread and wine. And then he commands them, more than anything, to carry on the mission of God by loving one another.
